Scrolling and comprehension: how Year 4 readers navigate long digital texts

We followed 46 Year 4 readers as they read the same story on paper and on a tablet. Readers who scrolled in short bursts recalled the plot as well on screen as on paper. Readers who scrolled quickly lost track of sequence.

We suggest three classroom routines that slow scrolling without banning screens.
